BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT

– a treatment alternative for malignancies and bl0od disorders

TYPES

  1. Autologous- client transplant with own harvested marrow
  2. Synergeic- transplant between identical twins
  3. Allogenic – transplant from a genetically non- identical donor

Allogenic transplant is the most common type.

Complications from a bone marrow transplant:

  • Failure of Engrafment
  • Infection
  • Graft VS Host  Disease- an immunologic reaction.

 

Transplantation:

– during the day of the transplantation, the client will have a few circulating WBC.

Frozen marrow will be infused to the client’s catheter (like an ordinary blood transfusion)

 

Preventing Complications

♠ Complications can often be severe and life threatening.
