Drug Use

Here are some of the most common abused substances that can be included in the NCLEX:

  • Opiates (Opiates, Heroin, Morphine)
  • Sedative Hypnotics ( Barbituates & Benzodiazepines)
  • Stimulants ( Cocaine)

Opiates

– usually has analgesic effects

Withdrawal Symptoms:

  • Nausea & vomiting
  • headaches
  • GI disturbances
  • anorexia
  • chills

Treatment:

  • Narcan (reverses the CNS depression)

Sedative Hypnotics

  • Are CNS depressants
  • Signs of Overdose includes:
  1. cardiovascular
  2. respiratory depression.
  • Treatment: Acvtivated Charcoal, Gastric Lavage
