Anticonvulsants

– helps inhibit seizure activity by depressing the abnormal neuronal stimulation.

Drugs include:

  • Peganone
  • ♣ Cerebryx
  • Misantoin
  • ♦ Phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek)

Used to treat:

  • status epilepticus
  • tonic- clonic seizures
  • terminal neuralgia

Contraindicated in:

  • sinoatrial block
  • sinus bradycardia

Side Effects/ Adverse Reactions:

  • Gingival hyperplasia
  • diplopia
  • tremors
  • nausea and vomiting

– Avoid alcohol when taking anticonvulsants
