Anticonvulsants
Anticonvulsants
– helps inhibit seizure activity by depressing the abnormal neuronal stimulation.
Drugs include:
- Peganone
- ♣ Cerebryx
- Misantoin
- ♦ Phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek)
Used to treat:
- status epilepticus
- tonic- clonic seizures
- terminal neuralgia
Contraindicated in:
- sinoatrial block
- sinus bradycardia
Side Effects/ Adverse Reactions:
- Gingival hyperplasia
- diplopia
- tremors
- nausea and vomiting
– Avoid alcohol when taking anticonvulsants
