COLORECTAL CANCER

– Cancer of the Colon or rectum.

  • CAUSES/FACTORS
  • DIET WITH HIGH LEVELS OF FATS, FRIED FOODS AND REFINED CARBS

Assessment

  • CHANGE IN STOOL (CONSISTENCY, COLOR)
  • RECTAL BLEEDING, ANEMIA
  • MAHOGANY COLORED OR BRIGHT COLORED STOOLS

APPENDICITIS

– Location of the appendix: attached to the cecum in the right lower abdomen.
– It usually starts as epigastric pain and then moves into the right lower quadrant.

  • THIS AREA IS CALLED THE MCBURNEY’S POINT

Remember: ♣ No Laxatives or Enemas w/ ct’s with appendicitis, because it cause perforation.
Assessment/ Symptoms

  • LOW GRADE FEVER
  • NAUSEA AND VOMITING.

Diagnosis:

  • THERE IS AN ELEVATED WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT
  • THERE WILL BE SOME BOWEL DISTENTION.

Procedures:
– ◊ Apendectomy
Pre Op: Administer analgesics, IV Fluids and antibiotics
– The patient can be discharges the same day or the next day.
