GOUT


Excess amount and defect in the metabolism of uric acid.

Assessment:
Inflammation in the joints
Pain within the joints
Presents of Uric Acid around large toe

Interventions:
-decrease intake of purine foods.
-decrease intake of alcohol.

TREATMENT:
Antigout Medications
– Allopurinol

Side Effects:

  • vomiting, diarrhea;
  • drowsiness, headache;
  • changes in your sense of taste; or
  • muscle pain.
      * Be careful when taken with a blood thinner such as dicoumarol or warfarin (Coumadin)

– Probenecid
(force fluids to pt. 2-3 L/day).

NSAIDS
Diet
