Encephalitis

– inflammation of the brain caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites

* it is usually caused by a viral infection.

Remember: TREATMENT (Pharmacological)

The goal is to provide supportive care (rest, nutrition, fluids) to help the body fight the infection, and to help relieve the symptoms.

  • Antiviral medications, such as Acyclovir(Zovirax) and foscarnet (Foscavir).
  • Antibiotics — if infection is caused by certain bacteria.
  • Anti-seizure medications (Phenytoin) to prevent any incidence of Seizures.
  • Steroids (prednisone or dexamethasone) to reduce brain swelling.
