HEADACHES
– Headaches are a common symptom of a variety of neurologic and non-neurologic disorders- Three most common headaches are migraine headaches, cluster headaches and tension headaches.- Ct. are encouraged to have a headache diary.
Migraine Headache
A migraine headache, is an episodal familial disorder manifested by unilateral, frontotemporal, throbbing painin the head which is often worse behind one eye or ear. It is often accompanied by a sensitive scalp, anorexiaor photopobia (sensitivity to lighta), and nausea with or without vommiting.
– Migraine headaches are mediated via the trigeminal vascular systems.- platelets clump together and serotonin, a vasoconstrictor, is released, arteries dilate and triggersthe release of prostaglandins, chemicals that cause swelling, and substances increase sensitivity to pain.
MIGRAINE
– falls into three categories
1. migraines with aura
2. migraines without aura
3. atypical migraines
Aura- is a sensation that signals the onset of a headache or a seizure.- in a migraine, the aura occurs immediately before the migraine episode.- most headaches are migraines without aura.v
